Our Leather Bags & Leather Care
Vintage Inspired Leather Bags
All leather bags in this collection are handmade. We work with a proud family business who have been making leather bags and shoes for 3 generations, using traditional techniques. The designs are timeless and classic, adapted to a 21st century lifestyle for practicality and style. The assortment of satchels, backpacks & rucksacks, travel bags, mini bags etc are suitable for everyone, and we have lots of sizes and designs to choose from.
Our bags are made from goat leather (also called Morocco Leather) which is a soft, somewhat water resistant and strong leather suitable for bag making.
The presence of lanolin in goat hides, which is a kind of grease produced from the goat’s skin, contributes to its softness and durability. Goat skins are also lighter in weight than cow hides, which also makes it a great choice for bags. No one wants a bag which is already too heavy before you put anything in it!
A goat hide is naturally light in colour. By applying soya bean oil to the skins and letting them “tan” outdoors, the result is a gorgeous rich brown reddish colour. The skin is not treated with any chemicals, making this a very natural procedure. This process also ensures all bags are slightly different in appearance, some will take on a lighter shade while some bags will turn dark rich brown. When you first start using your bag, refrain from using light coloured clothing to avoid any excess oil from creating stains on your clothes.
As leather is a natural material, markings and variations in colours, grains and texture all contribute to the uniqueness and characteristics of your leather product.
Each bag will have its little marks and differences, so there will never be two which are identical. This is part of the bag and not considered faults.
Your bag will get softer the more you use it, and the colour may also change to slightly darker with time.
How To Care For Your Leather Bag
To keep your bag looking its best and lasting for a long time, we suggest you “feed” the leather now and again. A light leather cream does the job, or simply dampen a sponge lightly with a neutral smelling oil and gently rub your bag. Be careful to let the oil settle into the bag before using it again as the oil could stain your clothing.
As mentioned earlier, our bags can take a little bit of rain, however, if you want your bag waterproof we suggest you apply a suitable product. There are many to choose from, we use Collonil’s Carbon PRO which works very well.
The Natural Aroma of Leather
Goat hides has a distinct smell, a little bit stronger than cow. The smell is all natural, and will wear off when you use your bag. If you prefer though, you can use a couple of drops of essential oil mixed with a non-odorous cooking oil on a sponge, and rub carefully over your bag. We like sandalwood and patchouli, as they are natural and earthy, but which ever scent you like should work nicely. You can also spray a bit of Fabreeze inside the bag, or try a dusting a bit of baking soda in the bag. Leave inside bag for around 24h, so that the soda can absorb the odour.
